01 Nov Leading From Within: Breaking Down Boundaries in Team Leadership
I had a reflection on how, at times, team leaders do not fully grasp the factors that lead to separation and a lack of trust within their teams. Often, it’s the small, seemingly insignificant actions—rather than the major events—that can either foster connections or establish barriers between leaders and their teams. For instance, during a recent company event, the leader chose to sit at a separate table, surrounded by a select group of senior managers, while the rest of the team mingled at another table. This physical separation from the team—even unintentionally—can create a sense of distance, encouraging the “us vs. them” dynamic. To genuinely inspire and engage their teams, leaders must step down from the “pulpit” and lead from within, embracing a role that nurtures collaboration and shared dedication.
Why Leading From Within Matters
When leaders lead from within, they create an environment of psychological safety, where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas openly, knowing they’re supported. This inclusive approach builds shared accountability and trust, as everyone feels equally committed to the outcomes. It also fosters open communication, removing hierarchical barriers so team members can express themselves freely. By engaging alongside the team, leaders humanise their role, becoming more approachable and relatable. These qualities together strengthen the bonds of trust and connection, helping the team work more cohesively.
Moving Beyond the Us vs. Them Mentality
While it can feel natural to set oneself apart to maintain authority, leadership is most effective when leaders are connected rather than distanced. Authority doesn’t require separation; it requires empathy, approachability, and a commitment to the team’s journey. By stepping into the group, leaders create an atmosphere of trust, which inspires teams to tackle challenges collectively, as a united “we.”
When leaders consciously choose to be part of the team, they break down barriers and create lasting cohesion. Leading from within transforms leadership into a journey taken together, emphasizing the power of collaboration and shared purpose in achieving goals.
