Too many chiefs?
What is the general effect of Leadership development at the expense of Management development, and what is the specific case in South Africa? For example, do we experience strategic disconnect, operational inefficiency and limited scalability more than other parts of the world?
We have recently worked with middle-managers in various organisations. They report that they ‘get’ the overall strategy but don’t know how to translate this into operational priorities for their direct teams. They want to do more but don’t know how.
Middle managers are the bridge between strategy and execution, yet are underserved in management and leadership development programs.
Not every role requires leadership in the traditional sense (visionary, transformational). Management skills are critical in the hustle and bustle of technical and operational roles where formation gathering and disseminating, negotiating, resource allocation, conflict resolution, and precision are key and should get more attention in the ‘training budget’ and agenda.
What is your view on this? And what are you seeing in your organisation?
