Forming: Building the Foundation for Team Success

At the beginning of any team’s journey, picture a newly formed team coming together for the first time. Some members are bursting with enthusiasm, eager to contribute and make an impact. Others sit quietly, cautious and unsure, observing the dynamics while wondering if they’ll find their place. Questions linger in the air: “What’s expected of me? How do I fit in? Will we work well together?” These are common experiences in the Forming stage, where individuals transition from being strangers or acquaintances to becoming part of a collective effort to achieve something meaningful.

Teams come together for various reasons—perhaps a new project has been launched, a business unit has restructured, or fresh talent has joined to support a growing organisation. Whatever the reason, the bottom line is the same: the team has a shared goal, and how well they “form” during this initial stage will set the tone for their journey ahead. But getting this stage right isn’t always easy. Teams may struggle with unclear expectations, overlapping roles, or even unspoken fears of failure. Left unchecked, these issues can quickly derail progress. That’s why this phase is so critical. Forming isn’t just about introductions and icebreakers—it’s about creating a foundation for trust, alignment, and purpose. It’s the opportunity to address potential cracks before they widen and to ensure every team member feels seen, valued, and ready to contribute.

In my previous blog, Navigating the Team Terrain: Mapping the Journey to Success (read here), I briefly touched on how each stage of Bruce Tuckman’s Team Development Cycle plays a crucial role in shaping cohesive, high-performing teams. Forming being where it all begins.

What to expect

The Forming stage is a blend of excitement and uncertainty for both team leaders and members. Leaders play a vital role in providing clarity and setting the tone, offering guidance as team members navigate their roles, clarify responsibilities, and begin building connections. For team members, this stage often brings enthusiasm and some apprehension as they adapt to new dynamics, explore how they fit into the group, and try to understand what is expected of them. It’s a natural phase of early development, where everyone is observing, assessing skills, personalities, and contributions, laying the groundwork for future collaboration.

This stage demands patience from all involved. Leaders must communicate clearly, actively foster trust, and establish psychological safety for team members to feel comfortable sharing their ideas and concerns. Simultaneously, team members should focus on building relationships and aligning with the team’s goals, even as they find their footing.

Forming a launchpad

At WorldsView Academy, we have seen tremendous success with our Purposeful Teams™    programme in helping teams soar through the Forming stage. Designed to address key dimensions of team dynamics, Purposeful Teams™ guides teams through a facilitated journey of connection, clarity, and alignment. One participant described their experience as â€śtransformational for our team!” Another said, â€śWe came in as individuals but are leaving as a team, up for our very stiff challenges.”

A significant aspect of the Purposeful Teams™ approach is its focus on helping teams define their purpose and align their efforts with the organisational mandate. The programme fosters open, meaningful conversations that anchor the team in its purpose, providing clarity and direction—crucial during the Forming stage. Another delegate noted: â€śI would recommend every team leader and their team attend… You will gain such clarity of purpose for your team and renewed energy to focus on your clients.” He couldn’t have said it better, Purposeful Teams isn’t just for newly formed teams but also for those who need to a renewed sense of direction and purpose.

To transition smoothly onto the next stage of the Team Development Cycle (Storming), teams should focus on building strong foundations by clarifying roles and expectations, fostering trust through relationship-building, and aligning around a shared purpose. Establishing team norms for communication and decision-making is essential, as is leveraging structured programmes like Purposeful Teams™ to accelerate alignment and effectiveness.
